Lapidary Classes

Lapidary I is an introduction to the art of cutting and polishing rocks. The goal of this class is to have students create a beautiful oval cabochon. Students learn the correct usage of diamond trim saws, including their maintainence and what to look for in purchasing a rock saw. The project then continues with the rough shaping of their stone using hard diamond coated grinding wheels, followed by the gradual finishing on soft rubber wheels using carbide grit papers. Finally the technique of the leather backed polisher is used to put on the mirror finish to the students cabochons, which can be used in their jewelry.. Class includes an exploration of different types of rocks collectable for jewelry quality cutting. Tuition is for three two hour classes held weekly. All equipment and supplies are provided.

Purple slab

Lapidary II allows students to continue to hone their skills cutting and polishing rocks. This class introduces the use of slab saws to allow the creation of proper slabs for cabochon creation. This class developes the skill of creating freeform cabochons. Students supply their own slabs for class and are required to complete to cabochon projects. Slabs are available for sale at the class. Students wishing to cut their own slabs will have the slab saw available for a nominal fee.Tuition is for three two hour classes held weekly.
